Rally July 29 + Collaboration Opportunity
Aloha Neighbors,
Save Section 9 and partners are planning a rally before the hearing on NYCHA’s Fiscal Year 2027 Draft Annual Plan on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at 5pm at The Theater at City Tech (285 Jay Street in Downtown Brooklyn). The rally attendees will then move inside where tenants and allies will have an opportunity to testify from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The annual draft plan is how NYCHA communicates what they intend to do to, and for, tenants. In this plan they list programmatic changes and also list the developments being targeted for privatization or demolition. The list of developments begins on page 122. We know that privatization via PACT harms tenants. Since 2008 tenants have faced an increase in evictions and rental burden under the PACT program. https://www.hrw.org/report/2022/01/27/tenant-never-wins/private-takeover-public-housing-puts-rights-risk-new-york-city
The threat of demolition must concern us all. The tenants at Fulton Elliot and Chelsea Houses continue to fight for their homes and are appealing the recent decision by the appellate court. But NYCHA is considering demolition at Red Hook West and won't stop there... https://citylimits.org/nycha-can-move-ahead-with-chelsea-redevelopment-court-decides/
We must come together and call for a moratorium on privatization and demolitions. We must vehemently oppose privatizations, displacements and demolitions.
We would love to partner with you on this rally. Please let me know by COB July 22 if you would like to be listed as a collaborator for this rally. To avoid spamming folks please do not "reply all". When replying please provide your logo, a quote for the press release, and note if you would like to add a speaker to the roster.
In solidarity,
Ramona
